'Red One' Breaks Amazon Prime Video Records Despite Mixed Reviews
Red One, the holiday action-comedy starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Chris Evans, has set new viewership records on Amazon Prime Video. Despite a lukewarm box office performance and mixed critical reception, the film has become Amazon Prime Video's biggest movie debut ever.
Directed by Jake Kasdan, Red One features Johnson as Callum Drift, the head of North Pole security, who teams up with a hacker named Jack O'Malley, played by Evans, to rescue Santa Claus (J.K. Simmons) from a mysterious villain. The film blends holiday themes with high-octane action sequences, aiming to offer a fresh take on Christmas movies.
Upon its theatrical release on November 15, 2024, Red One garnered a modest $175.5 million worldwide against a production budget estimated between $200–250 million.
Critics provided mixed reviews, with some praising the film's festive action elements, while others felt it lacked originality. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian described it as "profoundly depressing and blandly sentimental," awarding it one out of five stars.
Despite these critiques, Red One found a substantial audience upon its streaming release on December 12, 2024. Within the first four days, the film attracted over 50 million viewers, making it Amazon Prime Video's most-watched movie debut to date.
